DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 is committed to protecting and empowering consumers by expanding the distribution of its school supply price guide and intensifying monitoring efforts throughout the region.
In June, the DTI Head Office released the updated “Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies” to assist consumers as the new school year begins in July. Regional Director Romeo L. Castañaga stated, “The Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies serves as a reference for purchasing essential school items. It empowers consumers to make informed choices by comparing prices and finding the best deals within their budgets.”
The 2024-2025 price guide features eight categories and lists 173 different school items (known as Stock Keeping Units or SKUs), a significant increase from last year’s 117 SKUs.
The guide includes items such as notebooks, pad papers, pencils, ball pens, crayons, erasers, sharpeners, and rulers. Among the 117 SKUs from the previous year, 68% have maintained their prices, 8% have decreased, and 24% have increased due to rising paper costs, upgrades in crayon quality, and production expenses.
Despite these price fluctuations, DTI has closely coordinated with manufacturers and suppliers. The slight price increases for certain items are attributed to the global rise in the cost of basic raw materials used in school supply production.
Castañaga emphasized the significance of the 2024 School Supplies Price Guide, facilitated by the DTI Consumer Affairs and Advocacy Bureau (CAAB), to ensure fair pricing for essential school items as the school year begins. “The price guide empowers consumers to find quality and affordable school supplies. While some items have seen minor price adjustments, we assure everyone that the prices listed remain reasonable,” he said.
To promote vigilant purchasing, the regional trade chief advises consumers to check the following product labels:
Pad Paper: Number of pages, paper type (book, bond, or econobond)
Crayons: Brand name, number of crayons in the box, “non-toxic” label (FDA approval), country of origin Pencils: Brand name, hardness grade (No. 1, 2, 3), country of origin Ballpens: Brand name, tip classification (fine, medium, etc.), manufacturer’s name and address.
For a smoother shopping experience, DTI recommends creating a school supply list and reviewing the 2024 Price Guide before visiting bookstores or department stores.
In the meantime, DTI 11 provincial and field offices are actively monitoring prices and the availability of items listed in the guide at various establishments selling school supplies throughout the region.
