Majority of Filipino families consider themselves poor: SWS Survey

DAVAO CITY, Philippines –— In June 2024, approximately 58 percent of Filipino families rated themselves as poor, marking a significant increase from previous months, according to a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) released on Thursday, July 18.

The survey revealed that 58 percent of families considered themselves poor, while 30 percent stated they were not poor, and 12 percent categorized themselves as borderline.

This 12-point rise from March 2024’s 46 percent is the highest recorded since June 2008, the SWS reported.

The survey estimated that around 16 million families identified as poor in June 2024, compared to 12.9 million in March 2024.

Among the regions, Mindanao had the highest self-rated poverty rate at 71 percent, followed by the Visayas at 67 percent, Balance Luzon at 52 percent, and Metro Manila at 39 percent, according to the SWS.

The survey highlighted that self-rated poverty had previously peaked at 74 percent in a July 1985 survey conducted by the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference (BBC). Since then, it fluctuated between 72 percent in February 1992 and a low of below 38 percent in March 2019, based on SWS data.

Families who considered themselves poor stated that they would need a monthly budget of at least P15,000 to no longer feel impoverished. This self-rated poverty threshold has remained stable over the past 10 quarters, the SWS noted.

Additionally, the survey outlined median monthly family expenses, with house rent averaging P3,000, transportation costs for work and school at P2,000, internet expenses at P900, and mobile phone load at P360.

Conducted from June 23 to July 1, the survey involved face-to-face interviews with 1,500 adults.
