ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Five individuals were killed and 24 others were injured in a devastating explosion at a fireworks warehouse on Marquez Drive, Tetuan, on Saturday afternoon, June 29.
According to the latest report from the City Fire Department, the explosion destroyed the storage facility and a nearby residential house, while 15 other structures sustained partial damage.
In response to the incident, Mayor John Dalipe has ordered a thorough investigation. He also directed the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) to provide all necessary assistance and support to the affected individuals and families, especially those who lost their lives.
The victims who perished in the explosion have been identified as:
- Roly Limen, 38 years old
- Miriam Daiz Gregorio, 37 years old
- Arden Limen, 4 years old
- Erica Mae Lacastesantos, 18 years old
- Jonalyn Enriquez Ramos, approximately 19-20 years old
The City Fire Department’s partial count recorded 24 injuries, while the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported a total of 38 injuries. Among these, 30 individuals suffered minor wounds, and 8 sustained serious injuries.
The CSWDO is conducting its assessment and profiling of the victims as of the latest update.
The fire was reported at 4:14 PM on Saturday, reached a second alarm status, and was declared under control by 6:40 PM. Fire investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
Dalipe’s administration is committed to providing support and ensuring that a thorough investigation is conducted to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
