NBI XI raids approximately 100 “Bookies” stalls past months

DAVAO CITY, Philippines –— The National Bureau of Investigation XI has conducted raids on about 100 “Bookies” stalls over the past several months, confirmed by NBI-Southeastern Mindanao Director Atty. Archie Albao to Newsline on Saturday, July 20.

The crackdown, focused primarily in Davao City and Davao del Norte.

“Bookies” is an illegal numbers game utilizing winning numbers from the small-town lottery (STL) draws of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

Albao said they are receiving requests for assistance from Melquiades A. Robles, General Manager of the PCSO Central Office in Davao, in their efforts against these illegal operations.

Director Judge Jaime B. Santiago and Justice Secretary Remulla have issued standing orders to pursue illegal “Bookies” operators.

In a recent operation in Barangay Obrero, an NBI poseur bettor successfully confirmed the illegal activity by placing a test bet.

During the operation, a 24-year-old resident named Jham from Purok Zone 2, Fatima Village, Sasa, Davao City, was apprehended and charged under Section 3(c) of Republic Act No. 9287 for involvement in illegal numbers games.

The arrests highlight law enforcement’s commitment to uphold the law and protect public welfare from activities that undermine community security.

Records indicate that the majority of those apprehended during operations are employees rather than the operators themselves.
