Governor Jubahib returns to office after 90-day suspension

TAGUM CITY, Philippines — “Thank you for the love and support,” said Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib as he addressed his constituents for the first time after serving a 90-day suspension issued by the Office of the President.

Jubahib marked his return with a Holy Mass held at the provincial gymnasium, coinciding with the first Monday convocation for capitol employees. His arrival was met with cheers and chants of “Kuya Gob, Kuya Gob” from employees and supporters.

Speaking before a packed provincial gymnasium, Jubahib gave special recognition to the members of the Ata-Manobo tribe from various towns in the province, who he said stood by him during his lowest moments.

“I endured it, and during my suspension, I felt the overwhelming love from the people, which continues to this day,” he said in the vernacular.

He concluded his 48-minute speech with a call to action: “Let’s all stand up, support me, protect me, and help me so that we can continue the development of our beloved province, Davao del Norte.”

The gymnasium was filled with political leaders and officials who came to welcome the governor back.

In a media interview, Jubahib reflected on his suspension, saying, “I am happy to be back. During my 90-day suspension, I learned who my true friends are. I learned many things, which made me wiser. I know I can face all challenges because the people stood with me, and for that, I am grateful.”

Jubahib also addressed the termination of more than 300 contract service employees whose contracts were not renewed by the acting governor. “I will check the budget, but I know it has been almost consumed. If possible, I will try to accommodate the terminated employees because I know their reemployment is crucial for their families,” he added.

Sunny Rose, a job order appointee whose contract was not renewed, hopes to be rehired as she is the sole breadwinner for her family and has school-age children.

There are unconfirmed reports of two more upcoming suspensions against Jubahib. In response, he said, “I work and will always work for the benefit of Davao del Norte residents, and I am ready to face any challenges. I have faith in God.”
