Courteney Cox is proud of the work she and her castmates did to make Friends the cult classic it is today—but she doesn’t remember filming a lot of it.
The actress, who played Monica Geller on the sitcom, told TODAY’s Willie Geist on Sunday, “I should’ve watched all 10 seasons, because when I did the reunion and was asked questions, I was like, ‘I don’t remember being there.’ I don’t remember filming so many episodes.”
Cox said her terrible memory is to blame.
“I’m kinda bummed that we didn’t spend more time taking pictures. Because I don’t have a lot to look back at,” she added. “I see it on TV sometimes, and I stop and go, ‘Oh, my God, I don’t remember this at all. But it’s so funny.”
Cox and the rest of the main Friends cast—Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer—reunited onscreen last year for the first time since the series wrapped in 2004. Looking back at their time together was bittersweet for many of them. Aniston told The Hollywood Reporter that she had to walk out several times because the emotions were too much, and she admitted to E! News that at one point during the reunion, everyone—except maybe Schwimmer—was in a puddle of tears.
Cox also said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show of the reunion, “It was unbelievable. It was so emotional. It’s an unscripted reunion, but we got to be on Stage 24 for the first time, all of us in, like, I forgot how many years. 15 years? 17 years?”
She even brought up her memory issues at the time to host Ellen DeGeneres. “Oh, God, I have the worst memory. Everything came up that I forgot about,” she said.
Interestingly, she’s not the only one. Perry—who was struggling with addiction for much of the time he was filming Friends—previously said he doesn’t remember years of his life, nor of his time on set. And during the reunion, Schwimmer admitted he doesn’t remember filming “The One with the Ball,” while Kudrow said that her husband, Michel Stern, loves watching old Friends episodes, but she’s “mortified” with herself, and, “There are seasons I’ve never seen.” LeBlanc, however, remembers pretty much everything, as he said he was just “so proud to be on the show.”
“That was on the other day, I just happened to be in the kitchen with Marina [his daughter], we were eating dinner, and I said to her, ‘Watch this, this is funny, watch David,’” he said at the reunion.
