DAVAO CITY – The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) has strongly condemned the brutal murder of a newlywed Filipina allegedly at the hands of her Slovenian husband during the holiday season in Bled, Slovenia.
Marvil Facturan-Kocjančič, 27, was reportedly beaten and stabbed to death by her husband, Mitja Kocjančič, 30, on December 29, 2024, following a heated argument in their apartment.
The tragedy occurred just days after Marvil moved to Slovenia to join her husband. The couple, who were married in the Philippines in late July 2024 after a whirlwind romance beginning in April, had appeared happy in photos celebrating their first Christmas together.
However, neighbors reported hearing loud screams from their apartment on the evening of December 29 and called the police. Upon arrival, authorities found that Mitja had barricaded himself inside. Police broke down the door and allegedly discovered Marvil lifeless, with Mitja standing nearby.
The suspect, a weight loss motivational speaker, was arrested and transferred to a psychiatric facility. According to local media outlet Slovenske novice, Mitja had a history of mental health issues.
The CFO expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to Marvil’s family and condemning the act of domestic violence.
On December 26, 2024, three days before the tragic day, the husband on his social media page posted this photo.
“As we offer our thoughts and prayers for Marvil’s family, we also stand in solidarity with them, condemning acts of domestic violence and seeking justice for our kababayan while honoring the beautiful life she lived,” the CFO said in a statement.
The Filipino community in Germany also expressed shock and grief, with the “Filipinos in Germany” Facebook page highlighting the widespread sorrow the case has caused, particularly among Filipinos in Slovenia. They noted that Marvil had just arrived in Slovenia on December 22, hoping to start a new life with her husband.
Mitja had previously shared online posts celebrating the holidays with Marvil, calling it his “best Christmas so far” and proclaiming “life is good” after she arrives in his hometown.
The CFO urged Filipino nationals experiencing domestic violence or abuse to seek help and support.
“Overseas-based Filipinos married to other nationalities or with foreign partners who experience acts of trafficking, domestic violence, or abuse may contact the CFO, 1343 Actionline Against Human Trafficking, or the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate for assistance,” the agency stated.
Authorities in Slovenia have launched a full investigation into the incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local and international communities. The CFO reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Filipinos abroad, emphasizing the importance of providing resources and support for those in need.
