DAVAO CITY — The Philippine Navy successfully rescued 26 survivors from the sinking motor launch M/L Bangsata near Taganak Island, Tawi-Tawi, on March 16, 2025.
The Singapore-flagged tanker EONIA first spotted the distressed vessel and immediately reported it to authorities, enabling the Philippine Navy’s Naval Monitoring Station (NMS) Taganak and patrol craft PC390 to launch a swift rescue operation. NMS Taganak maintained constant communication with EONIA, ensuring accurate coordination and location tracking of the incident.
At 9:05 p.m., PC390 arrived at the site, approximately 17 nautical miles southeast of Taganak Island, where survivors were found clinging to debris. By 10:05 p.m., all 26 individuals were safely brought onboard and provided with medical assistance, food, and warm clothing.
By 11:40 p.m., PC390 reached Taganak Pier, where the survivors were turned over to the Taganak Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) for further care. Meanwhile, six other passengers were rescued by a Malaysian vessel, and coordination is ongoing to facilitate their safe return.
According to survivors, M/L Bangsata departed Taganak at 1:45 a.m. en route to South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi, carrying 32 people. The vessel encountered rough seas and sank around 6:00 a.m., leaving passengers stranded until their rescue.
The Philippine Navy remains steadfast in ensuring maritime safety and urges seafarers to exercise caution, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine contributing factors and enhance maritime safety protocols.
