NBI: KOJC raid Not staged, insists on legitimacy of operation

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — In response to swirling rumors and speculation, Lawyer Arcelito “Archie” Albao, Regional Director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), emphatically stated that the recent operation at the compound of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) was entirely legitimate and not premeditated nor choreographed.

In an interview with Newsline on August 14, Albao addressed the various accusations against him and his agency, asserting, “It was a legitimate operation, not staged.” He emphasized that the August 9 raid was authentic, asserting, “Categorically, this is not a drama; this is not choreographed or staged. There was no arrangement regarding the operation. The diplomatic approach we employed was consistent with our previous operations.”

Photographs from the August 9 execution of the arrest warrant revealed that KOJC officials closely surrounded the ten NBI operatives during the guided search of the 4-hectare property.

Reports indicate that the KOJC limited the number of NBI personnel allowed on-site to just ten, and during previous searches, the movement of NBI agents was tightly controlled, with personnel entering the premises in a staggered manner. These operations were livestreamed on social media.

Albao further highlighted the NBI’s commitment to preventing violence during the operation, stating, “Our national director does not want bloodshed. It was his instruction to approach this situation calmly, to serve the warrant peacefully and orderly, and to engage with Pastor Quiboloy’s camp and legal team in hopes of a peaceful surrender should Pastor Quiboloy be present.”

The NBI director also clarified that he has no personal ties to KOJC founder Apollo Quiboloy or his associates, aiming to dispel any notions of bias or collusion. Despite these assertions, the agency has faced accusations of staging a “moro-moro” operation.

Critics have alleged that the movements of NBI operatives seemed to be coordinated with KOJC’s legal counsel, raising significant concerns about the integrity of the operation.

In defense of the NBI’s actions, Albao referenced past operations conducted over the previous three months, which led to the arrest of five individuals who are co-accused alongside Quiboloy in various cases. Although these suspects were apprehended, they were subsequently released on bail, further fueling criticism of the NBI’s effectiveness.

Albao also responded to allegations made by Arlene Stone, a former member of KOJC, who claimed that Albao was receiving bribes from Quiboloy. Stone alleged that Quiboloy is known for showering his acquaintances with cash and lavish gifts, suggesting that Albao may be among those benefiting from such financial favors. The NBI director strongly refuted these claims, stating that they were unfounded.

As the NBI continues its investigation into Quiboloy, who is currently a fugitive, the situation unfolds against a complex backdrop of legal and social dynamics involving religious institutions, allegations of misconduct, and the pursuit of justice.

Amid these challenges, Albao remains steadfast in his commitment to uphold the integrity of the NBI while addressing public concerns and criticisms regarding their operations.
