MisOcc Governor inspires graduates to embrace innovation and lead with purpose

TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental — “The future is yours to shape. Embrace innovation, lead purposefully, and strive to make a difference”, said Misamis Occidental Governor Henry S. Oaminal to the graduates Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology (NMSCST) on July 30, 2024, held at the People’s Gymnasium.

Oaminal lauded the sacrifices of the 825 graduates and their parents for reaching this significant milestone and urged them to utilize their education to drive positive change in society.

The event’s theme, “Innovating for a Technological Future: Leading Change Towards Industry 5.0 and Global Competitiveness,” underscored the institution’s commitment to preparing students for the challenges of a technology-driven world.

In his address speech, Oaminal emphasized that the graduates are facing another challenge which is employment opportunities but he said as long as they innovate and strive to hone what they learned, they will succeed in their journey.

The school has enjoyed the support from the Governor even during his term as a Congressman as he was instrumental in the school’s infrastructure development, including the construction of the library complex, dormitory buildings, and engineering and academic structures.

He also proudly mentioned his authorship of Republic Act No. 11186, which facilitated the conversion of NMSCST into the University of Northwestern Mindanao (UNM), aimed at enhancing academic opportunities and research capabilities.

Oaminal acknowledged the challenges, particularly the requirements for achieving university status, such as increasing student enrollment.

To support this goal, he announced initiatives under the One Family One Professional Program, which will prioritize local students for enrollment to ensure access to quality education.

“With increased enrollment comes the responsibility to provide adequate resources,” he emphasized, pledging the full support of the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental in funding additional teaching staff and necessary facilities to accommodate the growing student population.

Reflecting on NMSCST’s evolution and pivotal role in educational development across Misamis Occidental and neighboring provinces, Oaminal commended the institution for fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

He encouraged graduates to embrace innovation, critical thinking, and global competitiveness as they embark on their professional journeys.

“To the graduating class of 2024, today marks not just an end, but a new beginning in your lives. Your dedication and perseverance have brought you to this significant milestone,” he stated.

As the ceremony concluded, Governor Oaminal reiterated his belief in the transformative power of education, expressing confidence that NMSCST graduates are well-equipped to make meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond.

In a surprise gesture, he presented cash tokens ranging from P3,000 to P6,000 to the graduates, with additional cash rewards for those who earned Latin honors.

The 23rd Commencement Exercises of NMSCST not only celebrated academic achievements but also highlighted the commitment to nurturing future leaders prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s world.
