DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles has issued a heartfelt appeal for calm and sobriety in light of the ongoing situation at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) compound in Davao City.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, Archbishop Valles, who leads the Catholic faithful in the Archdiocese of Davao, emphasized the importance of peace and adherence to the rule of law during these tense times.
“As the Shepherd of the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Davao, I am morally impelled to speak out, for and on behalf of peace, and to make an appeal for calmness and sobriety among the people of Davao City, especially those involved in the ongoing situation at the KOJC Compound here,” Valles stated.
He reiterated the widespread call from both local and national observers for respect for the rule of law. “I simply wish to reiterate what so many people from Davao City and outside are calling for: the respect of the rule of law. Careful discernment, and prudence, and the regard for the basic civil liberties guaranteed by our constitution must be observed in compliance with the directives of the court,” he said.
The Archbishop expressed concern over the prolonged search operation at the KOJC compound, highlighting the troubling presence of a large number of law enforcers at a site dedicated to religious worship and education.
“The prolonged search being conducted, coupled with the overwhelming presence of law enforcers in a place dedicated for religious worship and for the education of the youth, is alarming and troubling, as it touches on sensitive issues of religious freedom,” Valles added.
He urged all parties involved to seek an immediate and peaceful resolution to the situation, calling for mutual respect and introspection.
“I appeal for the immediate peaceful resolution to the situation, and the mutual respect and introspection of all. Let us respect the humanity of everyone and their inherent rights,” the Archbishop concluded.
Archbishop Valles’ statement reflects a deep concern for maintaining peace and upholding constitutional rights amidst the ongoing tensions at the KOJC compound, emphasizing the need for careful and respectful handling of the situation.
