Dalipe, CSWDO consider calamity declaration amid widespread flooding in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines —Mayor John Dalipe is convening various city departments and national agencies to assess the situation and discuss declaring the city under a state of calamity due to extensive flooding caused by southwest monsoon rains on Friday, July 12.

According to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the flooding has led to five reported deaths, with two individuals still missing. Approximately 30 barangays have been affected, displacing 4,462 families comprising 15,179 individuals as of Monday morning, July 15.

Over the weekend, Mayor Dalipe and Majority Leader and District II Congressman Mannix Dalipe spearheaded relief operations across 37 evacuation centers accommodating displaced families. Congressman Dalipe has committed to securing funds for financial assistance to those affected by the floods.

Currently, 18 of the 37 evacuation centers remain operational as of Monday morning.

CSWDO head Socorro Rojas highlighted the urgency of declaring a state of calamity to ensure timely and adequate support for affected families not only from the July 13 flooding but also for future incidents.

In addition to relief efforts, the city plans to provide financial aid to families affected by the floods.

Mayor Dalipe has instructed immediate clearing operations in landslide-affected areas and intensified search, rescue, and retrieval efforts, particularly in sitio Anuling, Pamucutan, where a mother and son were buried along with their house during a mudslide on Friday night.

He also urged the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative and the Zamboanga City Water District to expedite the resolution of power and water supply concerns.

Meanwhile, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and CSWDO continue rapid assessments and needs analyses while reconciling data. The City Engineer’s Office has been tasked with assessing infrastructure damage, and the City Agriculturist Office is conducting an inventory of agricultural sector losses. The Department of Public Works and Highways is also evaluating infrastructure projects affected by the heavy rainfall.
