OZAMIZ CITY, Philippines — In a proactive response to the rising number of dengue cases, Mayor Henry Oaminal Jr. has directed the City Health Office to conduct thorough inspections and collect samples from areas suspected to be breeding grounds for Aedes species mosquitoes, the primary carriers of the dengue virus.
Out of the city’s 51 barangays, health personnel identified breeding grounds in 38 of them, and samples have been collected for laboratory testing.
As of Saturday, July 27, the Ozamiz City Health Office, led by Dr. Florilyn Irog-irog, has reported a total of 341 dengue cases, with 326 patients having recovered. Unfortunately, there have been six deaths, and currently, there are nine active cases.
Mayor Oaminal Jr. has instructed the health office to carry out extensive inspections to ensure that all identified breeding grounds are eliminated. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation in the city’s efforts to combat dengue.
The Mayor urged residents to adhere to the following strategies to avoid contracting the dengue virus:
- Search and Destroy: Actively seek out and eliminate mosquito breeding sites around homes.
- Self protection : Use mosquito repellent and wear protective clothing.
- Seek Early Consultation: Consult healthcare providers at the first signs of dengue symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, and joint or muscle pain.
- Support Fogging Operations: Participate in community fogging initiatives to control mosquito populations.
- Sustain Hydration: Ensure adequate fluid intake, especially if dengue symptoms appear.
By working together, the residents of Ozamiz City can help mitigate the threat of dengue and protect their community.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control reported that Aedes aegypti has long been recognized as a vector of dengue, causing major dengue fever epidemics in the Americas and South-East Asia.
