Davao Councilors surprised by proposal to pay P20 Million to Ironman 70.3 organizer

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Members of the City Council expressed surprise upon learning about a proposal to pay P20 million to the organizer of the upcoming Ironman 70.3 event. The issue arose during deliberations concerning road closures in preparation for the activity.

Councilor Conrado Baluran initiated the discussion on road closures, which led to the revelation of the P20-million payment proposal.

During the regular session on July 23, Majority Floor Leader Jesus “Cocoy” Zozobrado questioned City Hall Representative Atty. Dwight Domingo about the rationale behind the city’s payment to Sunrise Events Inc., especially given that the city had not previously made such payments. Domingo responded that the payment was intended for media value.

Zozobrado argued that the organizers have their own sponsors and do not require city funding, as they would generate revenue from the event. Additionally, Councilor Myrna Ortiz, Chair of the Finance Committee, was unaware of the proposal.

Due to the councilors’ uncertainty regarding the funding, they decided to defer the 20 Million IronMan budget discussion. Instead, they passed the road closure ordinance to inform the barangays including the Municipal Government of Sta. Cruz. Davao del Sir is affected by the closure slated for August 11, coinciding with the Kadayawan Festival 2024.

Some councilors even questioned whether Mayor Sebastian Duterte was aware or approved of the proposed payment to the organizers.
