DAVAO CITY (July 28) — How prepared are soldiers to respond when communities face a security threat?
That is the question the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division hopes to answer through a seven-day combat proficiency and preparedness competition involving troops from its different battalions.
The exercise began Sunday, July 26, at Camp Gen. Manuel Yan in Mawab, Davao de Oro, bringing together platoons from more than 10 battalions under the 10th ID, along with members of the 11th Regional Community Defense Group.
10th ID commander Maj. Gen. Alvin Luzon said the activity is designed to test the combat efficiency of troops through scenario-based response exercises that simulate situations soldiers may encounter in actual operations.
But beyond competition, the drill is also being used to identify gaps in the Army’s preparedness and determine what innovations may be needed to strengthen its response capabilities.
The 10th ID is responsible for security operations in cities and provinces across Davao Region, as well as parts of Northern Mindanao and Caraga.
Luzon said the exercise will help division officials assess how prepared their troops are to carry out security maneuvers when needed.
The exercise includes male soldiers from different platoons under the division’s battalions, as well as women soldiers from the 10th ID’s three brigades.
The participation of women soldiers also highlights the expanding role of female personnel in military operations and preparedness activities.
For communities across the 10th ID’s area of responsibility, however, the value of such exercises will ultimately be measured by what happens when real emergencies occur.
The region has experienced armed conflict, insurgency, criminal activity, and natural disasters that have repeatedly tested the ability of security forces and local governments to respond quickly.
A combat readiness drill can help troops sharpen their skills before they are needed in the field. But it also raises a broader question about preparedness: whether security forces have the training, equipment, coordination, and discipline necessary to protect civilians while minimizing risks to communities during actual operations.
For Luzon, the seven-day competition is intended to provide a clearer picture of the division’s operational readiness.
For the public, the exercise offers an opportunity to see whether military preparedness translates into safer communities, faster responses to threats, and greater protection for civilians.
The results of the competition could therefore serve as more than a measure of which platoons perform best.
They could help determine how the Army prepares its troops for the complex security challenges facing communities across Mindanao—and how effectively it can balance combat readiness with its responsibility to protect the people it serves.
