DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Ormoc City is gaining recognition as the new center of modern pentathlon in the Philippines, thanks to the recent establishment of a state-of-the-art facility funded with the support of Senator Bong Go.
The facility, which opened in 2023 and 2024, was made possible through the efforts of Senator Bong Go, Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance and Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, as well as local leaders including Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez and Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez.
The newly built pentathlon facility has quickly become a vital training ground for athletes, particularly benefiting the Philippine Modern Pentathlon Association (PMPA).
Since its inception, the facility has played a key role in helping Filipino athletes achieve notable success on the international stage.
This year alone, athletes trained at the Ormoc City facility have brought home several prestigious honors, including medals from the UIPM World Championships in Zhengzhou, China; the Asian Modern Pentathlon Championships in Hwaesong, South Korea; and the UIPM Southeast Asia Championships in Thailand.
On June 16, 2023, Senator Bong Go attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility, underscoring his commitment to advancing sports development in the country.
During the ceremony, Senator Go also announced support for the creation of a skate park in Ormoc City, further promoting active lifestyles among the youth.
Senator Bong Go emphasized that the construction of such sports facilities is a key component of his advocacy for healthier living and youth engagement. “Investing in sports facilities helps keep Filipinos away from negative influences like illegal drugs. Get into sports, stay away from drugs, to keep us healthy and fit,” he stated.
Ormoc City’s new facility and the ongoing support from local and national leaders are expected to continue driving the success of Philippine athletes and fostering a stronger sports culture in the region.
