DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES — A rescue operation unfolded on Sunday, August 25, when a 20-year-old and 52-year-old members of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), were successfully retrieved from the organization’s compound by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and his mother.
The rescue followed a formal complaint filed by Lorenzo’s father, Tommy, a resident of Eastern Samar, at the Sasa Police Station. Another mother from Midsayap, Cotabato Province was also rescued.
The complaint detailed the family’s concern over their son’s well-being and his inability to communicate with them since 2022.
Lorenzo had left home with a KOJC member under the pretense of receiving a scholarship in Cebu.
Tommy reported that after Lorenzo’s departure, the family had been unable to establish any direct contact with him.
Their attempts to resolve the situation through various agencies in Cebu proved unsuccessful. It was only after threatening to involve the police that they learned Lorenzo had been relocated to the KOJC compound in Davao City in June 2024.
According to Mr. Benitez, although his son was initially promised a scholarship, he requested to return home last year. KOJC officials, however, allegedly refused to allow him to leave.
The rescue operation was carried out with the cooperation of the Sasa Police Station, the Regional Women and Children Protection Desk (RWCPD), and the DSWD.
Following the successful extraction, Lorenzo was reunited with his family. The DSWD is now providing counseling and support services to the young man and his family to help them navigate the aftermath of this situation.
Lawyer Israelito Torreon, the lead counsel of KOJC, however, dismissed the claim saying it is a hearsay.
