DAVAO CITY, Philippines — City Police Director Colonel Hansel Marantan has initiated a full investigation into the death of a woman allegedly shot by her boyfriend, a police officer, during a heated altercation early Wednesday morning, August 7, in Purok San Miguel, Monseda Compound, Barangay Indangan.
The officer involved has been identified as Patrolman Alvin John Tayamin, while the victim identified as Justine May Villaroja, a resident of Dumanlas in barangay Buhangin. Tayamin immediately surrendered after committing the crime.
“I am deeply troubled by the unfortunate incident in which a police officer resorted to using his firearm against a civilian. I extend my heartfelt apologies to the victim’s family for this tragic event,” Marantan stated.
In light of the incident, Tayamin has been restricted from the police camp pending a thorough investigation.
“While I am prepared to take full responsibility if this incident is found to be connected to the official duties of our personnel, initial indications suggest that a personal matter was involved. However, this in no way justifies the loss of a civilian life,” Marantan added.
The station commander of Mandug has been ordered to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the case and ensure that appropriate charges are filed against Tayamin.
“To the grieving family, please accept our sincere condolences. I am committed to ensuring that justice is served for the victim and their loved ones,” Marantan concluded.
Authorities are currently exploring jealousy as a possible motive in the case.
