Completion of Maa-Magtuod flyover superstructure expected by November

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced that the superstructure of the P1.6-billion Maa-Magtuod flyover will reach completion in November this year, despite ongoing challenges related to road right-of-way issues.

Currently, the project stands at 70% completion, marking substantial progress.

However, efforts to resolve road right-of-way (ROW) problems beneath the superstructure remain unresolved, with only 19 out of 35 affected property owners having agreed to government terms for land expropriation.

Four of the eleven spans have been cemented as of August 5.

Dean Ortiz, spokesperson for DPWH XI, confirmed ongoing negotiations with remaining property owners, noting the involvement of the Land Bank of the Philippines in facilitating these discussions. “We are still continuously talking with other property owners,” Ortiz stated.

The focus of current construction efforts lies on the girders of the superstructure, while bureaucratic processes regarding property acquisitions are still in progress. “The appraisal is still ongoing and it is with LBP, not with us,” Ortiz clarified.

Responding to concerns raised by affected landowners regarding delays in documentation and appraisals, Ortiz acknowledged challenges in expediting these procedures. “The delay is mainly attributed to ROW issues,” he explained.

Despite reaching significant completion milestones, unresolved ROW concerns continue to impede ongoing groundwork.

Ortiz affirmed that the project remains fully funded, emphasizing its critical role in alleviating traffic congestion along the national highway, a vital link connecting Davao City’s southern and northern districts.

The construction has caused notable traffic disruptions, underscoring the urgency of completing the flyover to enhance transportation efficiency.
