DAVAO CITY, Philippines — In less than ten minutes, members of the Davao City Council attempted to scrutinize the newly appointed Davao City Police Office Director. However, they realized they couldn’t judge him harshly as he had only assumed the post eight days ago.
Last week, upon the City Council’s request, Colonel Hansel Marantan attended the regular session on July 23. Councilor Luna Acosta, chairperson of the Committee on Peace and Public Safety, welcomed the Tagalog-speaking guest and asked him to introduce himself.
“I’m not sure if I’m wanted or unwanted here,” Marantan humbly remarked during his brief introduction. He admitted, “I’m not familiar with the dialect; this is my first time here despite spending close to seven years in Davao. So, it’s all for now, I cannot speak more of it. I always say words are cheap, so please give me some time for you to ask me about my performance. Thank You.”
Acosta emphasized the importance of continuity and collaboration for peace and public safety, expressing her hope that the Davao City Police Office, City Council, and executive department would work together effectively.
The serious tone of the session was momentarily lightened when Acosta asked Marantan directly, “Can we count on your commitment to collaborate and assist us in this endeavor?” Marantan replied with a straightforward “Yes, I do.”
“Despite any rumors you may have heard, rest assured that both the City Mayor and the City Council reaffirm our commitment to peace and security in Davao, fully supporting the Davao City Police Office,” Acosta assured.

Some councilors expressed their desire for clearer communication prior to recent incidents, with Councilor Diosdado Mahipus Jr. acknowledging, “It’s premature to judge Marantan’s capabilities at this stage.” He apologized for any uncertainty Marantan may have felt, urging him not to dwell on any doubts about his acceptance by the council or the public they represent.
“We won’t fault you for this uncertainty, but we do request clarification from the leadership of the Napolcom (National Police Commission),” Mahipus added.
In an interview with Newsline, Marantan affirmed his commitment to uphold the law and legal orders, pledging to perform as an exemplary officer.
