Netizens hopeful for rice price reduction in President Marcos Jr.’s third SONA

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — As President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. prepares to deliver his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, citizens are eagerly anticipating a commitment to lower the price of rice and other essential commodities.

In a survey conducted by Newsline Philippines, 31 out of 72 respondents expressed a strong desire to hear the President address his pledge to reduce rice prices. Netizens emphasized their long-standing expectation for Marcos to deliver on his campaign promise of achieving a P20 per kilo rice price.

“While Marcos promised during his 2022 campaign to lower rice prices, this commitment remains unfulfilled,” remarked several respondents.

Alongside rice price reduction, citizens are keen to hear the President’s strategy to tackle the broader issue of commodity price inflation.

Today, on Monday, July 22, Marcos is set to deliver his SONA at the Congress. Security preparations by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are in place to safeguard President Marcos Jr. and esteemed guests during the event, despite no identified threats.

The SONA is anticipated to provide clarity on the government’s economic agenda, particularly addressing concerns related to the cost of living and essential goods.
