Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. (Davao Light) has adjusted its residential electricity rates for July, with an increase of P2.9601 per kilowatt hour (kWh). The new rate stands at P10.8973/kWh, up from P7.9372/kWh in June.
For a typical household consuming around 200 kWh per month, this translates to an approximate increase of P592.02 in their billing cycle from July 12 to August 11 compared to the previous month.
This adjustment reflects the second installment of the staggered May billing from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), as directed by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) under Case No. 2024-017 MC.
The ERC ruling mandates Distribution Utilities to phase the collection of WESM-related generation charges incurred in May 2024 over four equal monthly installments from June 2024 to September 2024.
Managed by the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines Inc. (IEMOP), the Philippine WESM serves as a centralized platform for electricity trading, where prices are determined by actual demand and supply availability. Davao Light utilizes WESM to meet a portion of its electricity needs.
Fermin Edillon, Head of Davao Light’s Reputation Enhancement Department, noted, “The generation rate decreased this month due to lower power supply market prices and increased availability of cost-effective hydropower.
However, the phased payment to WESM, which was not fully reflected in the previous month’s billing, contributed to the overall increase in electricity rates.”
Davao Light advises customers to manage their energy consumption prudently, especially over the next few months.
“Given anticipated generation rate adjustments until September, we urge our customers to use energy efficiently to mitigate potential bill increases,” Edillon emphasized.
Furthermore, Davao Light appreciates its customers’ understanding as it complies with the ERC ruling.
