Floods and Landslides displace six families in Sultan Kudarat

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Six families in Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat, were evacuated after flash floods and landslides struck Barangay Masiag on the morning of June 26, 2024. The heavy rainfall that triggered these events is part of a series of moderate to heavy downpours affecting the region due to mild weather disturbances.

Hern Aries Galve, Chair of the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee (BDRRMC), reported that several houses in the village had tilted due to soil erosion caused by the floods and landslides. The affected families have been temporarily housed in the village center, where they are receiving necessary assistance and support.

Galve has appealed to residents to move to safer grounds immediately during heavy downpours to prevent accidents and ensure their safety. “We urge everyone to heed evacuation orders promptly and take necessary precautions to avoid further casualties and property damage,” Galve emphasized.

Persistent heavy rainfall in Sultan Kudarat has caused water levels in rivers and streams to rise rapidly, leading to flash floods in low-lying areas and landslides in upland regions like Barangay Masiag. The local government has been closely monitoring the weather and providing updates to residents to keep them informed and prepared.

Barangay Masiag, situated in an upland area of Sultan Kudarat, is particularly susceptible to landslides during heavy rains due to its steep slopes and loose soil. The recent downpour exacerbated these conditions, causing significant disruption to the lives of residents.

The municipal government, in coordination with the BDRRMC, has been proactive in its disaster response efforts. Emergency shelters have been set up, and relief goods, including food, water, and medical supplies, have been distributed to the affected families.

Efforts are also underway to assess the extent of the damage and plan for long-term rehabilitation and support for the affected families.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Sultan Kudarat has issued warnings to other vulnerable areas in the province, advising residents to stay vigilant and prepared for possible evacuations. The PDRRMO is also coordinating with national agencies to ensure that necessary resources and assistance are available for the affected communities.

In light of these events, the local government plans to enhance its disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. This includes conducting community drills, improving early warning systems, and implementing measures to reinforce vulnerable infrastructure. The goal is to build a more resilient community that can effectively respond to natural disasters and mitigate their impact on residents.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and participate in community efforts to bolster disaster readiness. The cooperation between the community, local government, and disaster response teams is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents in Sultan Kudarat.
