Jared Leto is a man who takes a red-carpet moment very seriously—by which I mean he never subscribes to the status quo, always pushing the boundaries, understanding that fashion and art are intertwined. The same sentiment could be applied to Iris van Herpen, the Dutch fashion designer whose avant-garde collections shown at Paris Couture Week consistently raise the bar, using advancements in technology to create garments in constant motion.
Seeing how this year’s Met Gala theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” centered on the Gilded Age, an era of industrial progress and, well, advancements in technology, along with the symbiosis between van Herpen and Leto, Jared wearing Iris seemed totally logical. I was totally on board. So, too, was a New York Times fashion critic. Even Getty Images—the go-to source for red-carpet coverage—labeled the photo as Leto.
But we were all wrong. Leto did attend the Met Gala, yes, but he wore Gucci; he is an ambassador for the brand. He even matched identically with his other doppelgänger, Gucci designer Alessandro Michele, in a beige brocade suit that recalled the twins from The Shining.
So who is this mystery man? Who is the other Jared Leto lookalike?
His name is Fredrik Robertsson, a frequenter of couture shows and the editor-in-chief of Boy magazine. The similarities between him and the actor are uncanny: both have high cheekbones, a slim face, facial scruff, and penchant for heavy eyeliner and theatrics. As I look at this image now, I still see Leto. I’m dumbfounded.
Do I still like the look knowing it’s not Leto? Do I still think it perfectly reflects the theme of the night? Absolutely. Kudos to you, Robertsson.
