Pamela Anderson will soon play Broadway’s resident femme fatale, Roxie Hart, during an eight-week limited run of Chicago this spring, marking her Broadway debut.
Her tenure as the infamous murderess (a role canonized by the likes of Gwen Verdon, Ann Reinking, and Liza Minnelli) will commence at the Ambassador Theatre on April 12 and run through June 5.
“I have always been a huge fan of Bob Fosse’s & Gwen Verdon’s work,” the former Baywatch star said in a statement, per Deadline. “Ann Reinking, too. Playing Roxie Hart is a dream fulfilled.”
The revival, she added, is an opportunity to fully give in to the material at hand. “Performing Fosse, you don’t have time to get in your head. You can’t dance, sing and think at the same time,” Anderson continued. “There is a freedom, a unique joy in knowing it’s all about the work. Playing Roxie Hart is a sweet escape for me.”
The original Broadway production of Chicago ran from 1975 to 1977. It was later revived in 1996 and has since held the record for the longest-running American musical on Broadway, even nabbing six Tonys at the 1997 awards ceremony.
Of the casting, Chicago producer Barry Weissler said, “Pam is a very moral person, extremely moral. … The difference between her as Pam and Roxie is Roxie doesn’t care about anyone but herself, and she doesn’t give a damn about the outside world as long as she can be famous. So Pam comes with totally opposite attributes in life, but she fits because of her celebrity, what she’s gone through in life.”
There has been a renewed interest in Anderson’s celebrity since the release of Hulu’s limited miniseries Pam & Tommy. The show chronicles the whirlwind marriage between the actress (played by Lily James) and Tommy Lee (played by Sebastian Stan), as well as the illegal distribution of their honeymoon sex tape.
Anderson, who reportedly did not support the Hulu project, has also teamed up with Netflix for a documentary about her life. “Not a victim, but a survivor,” she said while announcing the doc earlier this month. “And alive to tell the real story.”
