Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Oscar-nominated black-and-white film, Belfast, is perhaps his most vulnerable feature—and if you want your heartstrings pulled ahead of the Academy Awards, you can watch it now at home.
Inspired by his own childhood in Northern Ireland, Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film takes place in late-1960s Belfast during the outset of the Troubles, a 30-year ethno-nationalist conflict between the union loyalists and republican nationalists surrounding whether or not Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom. Though the film depicts a violent time in Ireland’s geopolitical history, its story unfolds through the wholesome perspective of a nine-year-old from a working-class Ulster Protestant family named Buddy (Jude Hill)—”[skirting] politics with a child’s-eye view of the Troubles,” per Vox.
Much of Buddy’s innocent point of view is ingeniously captured through Branagh’s cinematic direction, which contributed to the film’s several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and Sound. Dame Judi Dench, who plays Buddy’s grandmother, was additionally nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role alongside Ciaran Hinds, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his moving performance as the warm and wise Pop.
Despite its specific historical setting, Belfast is by and large a touching human story that resonates across barriers of time, culture, and nationality. To experience it before the awards ceremony this Sunday, see how to watch the Oscar-nominated film below.
