Charithra Chandran Says Bridgerton Season 2 Is All About Sisterhood

For Charithra Chandran’s first major red carpet premiere, she knew she wanted to go bold and big.

The 25-year-old actress plays Edwina Sharma in the second season of Netflix’s runaway hit regency romance Bridgerton. Her character finds herself in the middle of a love triangle involving Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the man who is set to marry her oldersister, Kate Sharma (portrayed by Simone Ashley). For the show’s highly anticipated premiere, she opted for a polka dot and poppy print off-the-shoulder gown by Carolina Herrera and peep-toe stiletto pumps by Christian Louboutin.

“It’s my first big fashion moment and my priority was to find something that really showed off my personal style—something that shows both my love of colorful elements, but with a classic and timeless feel,” she says. “Some inspirations for me tonight were Tracee Ellis Ross, Audrey Hepburn, and even a little Carrie Bradshaw.”

Chandran plays Edwina as an optimist and a perfectionist, contrasting with Kate, who is stubborn and almost frustratingly independent. Edwina will do whatever it takes for love, whether it’s the connection between herself and her future husband or the familial bond she shares with her sister. “Sisterhood and strong female characters,” she says, are two of the major themes this season.

“Honestly, the more representation of complex female relationships that we can get, the better,” adds the actress. “One of the things that attracted me to the series in the first place was how it paves the way for championing the female perspective. The female gaze, female characters with so much depth. We need more of that.”

The actress also praised her fellow costars, Ashley and Bailey, for the support they offered during filming.

“There was a lot of trust between the three of us and a lot of empathy,” adds Chandran. “Filming such an intense show during a pandemic is a unique experience that Jonny and Simone really understand, so I found comfort and solidarity in them.”

Now, with the show finally going live this Friday on Netflix, Chandran is grateful for the lessons she’s learned from playing Edwina.

“[Edwina taught me that] to choose to be open-hearted in a potentially difficult or cruel world takes a lot of bravery. Even if it makes you vulnerable at times, life is so much more beautiful when you are living as an optimist rather than being a cynic,” she says. “Most decisions we make never fall into the binary of right and wrong, but stand in the shades of grey in between. We could all do better with having more empathy and try to understand what the people around us are going through—and the intersectionality they bring to every experience.”
