DAVAO CITY (September 11)— President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will make history as the first Philippine president to attend a BRICS Summit, traveling to New Delhi on Sept. 12–13 as the Philippines assumes the chairmanship of ASEAN for 2026.
Marcos will attend the 18th BRICS Summit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Manila viewing the gathering as a strategic opportunity to deepen ties with some of the world’s major emerging economies.
BRICS—originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—has expanded to 11 members, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It also has 10 partner countries, among them Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The bloc represents about 49.5 percent of the world’s population, 40 percent of global GDP and 26 percent of international trade, positioning it as an increasingly influential platform for emerging economies.
Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Assistant Secretary Annalyn Ratonel said closer dialogue between ASEAN, under Philippine leadership, and BRICS could generate opportunities in trade, investment, regional security and climate resilience.
Marcos is also expected to meet Modi for bilateral talks on the Philippines-India Strategic Partnership and implementing their 2025–2029 Five-Year Plan of Action. Discussions may cover trade and investment, agriculture, climate change, defense and security, and science and technology.
The President will also meet Indian business leaders to follow up on investment commitments announced after his visit to India last year. Those commitments totaled $5.8 billion across technology, health, energy and infrastructure.
Asked whether Philippine membership in BRICS could be discussed, Ratonel said the matter requires “further study.” Manila, however, will continue monitoring developments within the bloc and engaging with it when appropriate.
The Philippine delegation will include First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda, and Finance Secretary Frederick Go.
The BRICS visit comes as Manila seeks to expand economic partnerships while maintaining ASEAN centrality and engaging a broader range of international partners.-Editha Z Caduaya
