MANILA (May 13) — The impeachment complaint against Sara Duterte is expected to move forward “forthwith,” according to newly installed Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano, who said the chamber would balance constitutional duties with growing public pressure to address urgent national concerns.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cayetano assured the public that the Senate would act on the complaint without unnecessary delay while also managing other pressing legislative priorities, particularly economic issues affecting ordinary Filipinos.

“We will do what has to be done, and there won’t be delays,” Cayetano said.

The Senate chief disclosed plans to convene an all-member caucus, possibly as early as Wednesday, to discuss how the chamber will handle the impeachment proceedings alongside unresolved committee leadership assignments and other institutional matters.

Among the expected topics are discussions involving the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee and pending committee chairmanships that remain under negotiation among senators.

Cayetano said he also consulted former Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who advised that the complaint first be referred to the appropriate committee in line with Senate rules and constitutional procedure.

While emphasizing that due process must be followed, Cayetano acknowledged concerns that prolonged political conflict could distract lawmakers from economic and governance issues requiring immediate attention.

“There is no reason to delay,” he said. “The longer this drags out, the more our attention remains focused there, when the country also needs us in other capacities.”

The impeachment complaint against Duterte has further intensified political tensions within the country’s leadership, placing the Senate at the center of a potentially historic constitutional process that could shape alliances ahead of future national elections.

Observers say the chamber now faces the difficult task of balancing political accountability, institutional credibility, and public expectations while ensuring that the impeachment proceedings do not paralyze legislative work on inflation, jobs, public services, and other day-to-day concerns affecting Filipinos.

As the Senate prepares for internal discussions, attention is now shifting to how quickly the chamber can organize proceedings — and whether political divisions among lawmakers will influence the pace and direction of the impeachment process.
