NASIPIT, Agusan del Norte (May 12) — Safety serves as a safeguard against risks and setbacks. It’s about looking out for one another while keeping our taskings on track. When the team practices it everyday, it becomes a habit that drives better performance and long-term success.

In observance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI) in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, was among the 25 establishments in the Caraga Region recognized with the SAFETY MILEstone (SMILE) Award by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Caraga on April 28, 2026, in Butuan City. This is the third time that TMI has received this recognition from DOLE.

The recognition aims to acknowledge organizations that achieved 1.5 million safe man-hours with zero Lost Time Incident (LTI). This milestone highlights AboitizPower’s strong commitment to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards in the workplace.

The award also reinforces the role of employers as key partners of DOLE Caraga in promoting a culture of prevention, particularly in high-risk sectors such as mining, construction, and manufacturing.

TMI recorded 1,638,406 safe man-hours, equivalent to 2,507 safe man-days, surpassing the target set under the SMILE program.

Beyond the numbers, TMI continues to prioritize employee well-being through initiatives such as “Project Amping,” an employee emotion monitoring system that captures and analyzes emotional states in real time. The program enables leaders to proactively address emotional risks and prevent unsafe behaviors in the workplace.

On the other hand, the “Rise and Shine” initiative uplifts contractor morale by recognizing volunteerism in facilitating safety toolbox meetings. Participating contractors are acknowledged and provided with two kilograms of rice as a token of appreciation.

“Prioritizing safety does not mean compromising performance. Rather, safety is our guide to operational excellence. When we remain disciplined and vigilant, we protect our people while sustaining reliable and efficient plant operations,” said Jerome Luchavez, TMI Nasipit Facility Head.

The Therma Marine plant in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte is an oil-fired facility equipped with two operational 50 MW diesel engines. Operating at a total capacity of 100 MW, it continues to support the Mindanao grid and complements the operations of its sister plant, Mobile 1, in Maco, Davao de Oro, while the ongoing construction of a 48 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) further strengthens its role in enhancing grid reliability and flexibility.
