MANILA (August 17) – The trough of a low pressure area (LPA) combined with the southwest monsoon or “habagat” is expected to bring rains over several parts of Luzon on Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

According to PAGASA, the Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Bataan will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the trough of the LPA. Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan will have similar weather conditions brought about by the southwest monsoon.

The rest of the country will generally see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms. PAGASA advised residents to remain vigilant against possible flash floods and landslides during heavy downpours.

As of 2 a.m., the LPA being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), tagged as LPA 08c, has a “medium” chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

PAGASA added that moderate winds from the southwest to southeast, with moderate seas ranging from 1.2 to 2.5 meters, will prevail over the western section of Luzon. Meanwhile, light to moderate winds with slight to moderate seas are expected in the northern section of Luzon and the rest of the country.
