DavaoBus Pilot Set for 2027 as DOTr Launches First ‘Libreng Sakay’ in Mindanao on NewsLine Philippines - Building Information Highway for the Community

DAVAO CITY (JULY 25) – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is accelerating its commitment to modernize public transport in Mindanao, with two landmark initiatives unfolding in Davao City: the upcoming pilot launch of the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project or DavaoBus in 2027, and the rollout of Mindanao’s first Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) program on July 24.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, who visited Davao to inspect ongoing infrastructure works in Calinan District, described DavaoBus as “a game-changer that must serve as a model for the entire country.” The 672-kilometer bus-based system will feature dedicated routes, upgraded terminals, and professionalized driver services. The first line will connect Catalunan Pequeño to Sasa, traversing key city corridors including Ulas, Matina, Bankerohan, Quirino, Bajada, Lanang, and Buhangin.
As part of the modernization plan, the country’s first-ever Bus Driving Academy will also rise in Davao to ensure that bus drivers undergo standardized training. “We’re not just building roads or buying buses—we’re creating a culture of safety, reliability, and professionalism,” Dizon said.
In tandem with the long-term DavaoBus rollout, DOTr also launched its first Libreng Sakay program in Mindanao, benefiting over 6,000 commuters daily along the Lasang to Roxas via Sasa route. The initiative, implemented in partnership with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), is designed to ease financial burdens on the public, particularly students and senior citizens.
“This route alone can help commuters save up to ₱500 a week,” Dizon emphasized. The free rides are available daily from 6–9 AM and 5–8 PM, including weekends and holidays, and will continue until 2028. The government has earmarked ₱70 million annually for the program, with plans to expand to other key areas such as Cabaguio.
The two projects reflect a unified vision for a more accessible, efficient, and inclusive transportation system in Davao and beyond.
