DAVAO CITY (May 4) —-An SUV crashed through the outer railing and slammed into the pedestrian walkway near the departure entrance of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 early Sunday morning, May 4, injuring several individuals.
According to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), the incident occurred at around 3:45 a.m. The impact of the crash caused damage to the railing and created panic among early morning travelers.
The driver of the SUV, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, is currently in police custody.
Authorities said they are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether the crash was caused by mechanical failure, human error, or other factors. As of this writing, the total number of injured has not been officially confirmed, though witnesses reported seeing airport personnel assisting several victims.
Airport security personnel, along with the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP), immediately responded to the scene. The area has since been cordoned off, with access restricted to authorized personnel from MIAA, the New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC), and investigators from the PNP.
Emergency medical teams provided first aid at the scene, while others were brought to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Ines urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information as photos and videos of the crash have begun circulating online. “We ask for understanding and patience as the authorities complete their investigation,” he said.
Despite the incident, airport operations at Terminal 1 continue with minimal disruption, although authorities have increased security presence in the area as a precaution.
Official updates will be released as more information becomes available.
