DAVAO CITY (April 24) — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has condemned recent threats and acts of violence targeting media practitioners, warning that such incidents pose a serious threat to press freedom ahead of the May 2025 midterm elections.
PTFOMS is actively investigating two separate cases involving media workers:
In Abra, Mayor Joseph Bernos of La Paz allegedly threatened DZRH reporter Romeo Beñas Gonzales through Facebook Messenger and during a video call on April 21, 2025.
In Negros Occidental, unidentified gunmen strafed the home of former Negros Press Club President and radio blocktimer Reynaldo Siason on April 20, 2025, in Talisay City. Siason and his family were unharmed.
PTFOMS has coordinated with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to investigate both incidents and implement measures to ensure the safety of media personnel.
“We assure the public and the media that every effort is being made to support Mr. Gonzales and Mr. Siason and ensure their safety,” said Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr., Executive Director of PTFOMS.
“We take all threats against media workers seriously and are committed to safeguarding their security as they fulfill their essential role in our democracy.”
Torres also called on all candidates in the upcoming elections to respect and uphold press freedom, emphasizing the importance of allowing journalists to perform their duties without fear of intimidation or violence.
“A free press is vital to a healthy democracy, and it is our collective responsibility to protect this fundamental right,” he added.
While strongly condemning attacks against the press, PTFOMS also urged journalists to uphold ethical and responsible reporting, especially in politically sensitive times.
“In these challenging times, the media must adhere to ethical reporting practices,” Torres said. “The burden lies with us all to ensure that journalism remains a force for truth and accountability.”
PTFOMS reaffirmed its commitment to expedite investigations and take all necessary action to protect media workers, particularly during the critical election period.
