DAVAO CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) conducted a search and rescue (SAR) operation following a vessel collision in the waters off Maasim, Sarangani Province, early Tuesday morning, March 25, 2025.
Based on initial reports, the Philippine-flagged tugboat M/TUG Sadong 33 collided with the Panamanian-flagged vessel MV Universe Kiza at around 4:20 a.m.
Upon receiving the report, the PCG immediately deployed a SAR team and three floating assets to respond to the emergency.
According to the company’s project engineer, M/TUG Sadong 33 had eight crew members on board. As of 8:00 a.m., six have been successfully rescued and are reportedly in good physical condition.
However, the cadaver of the vessel’s captain was recovered at the site, confirming his untimely death. The search continues for the remaining missing crew member.
The PCG also conducted an oil spill assessment, which yielded negative results, indicating no environmental contamination from the collision.
As of this writing, search and recovery operations remain ongoing.
