DAVAO CITY — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla administered the oath of office to newly appointed Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado today, September 30.
Secretary Remulla expressed his confidence in Commissioner Viado, emphasizing that he is well-suited for the leadership role at the BI.
This appointment follows the recent decision by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to relieve former Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco from his position on September 9.
Tansingco faced scrutiny after failing to promptly notify the Department of Justice about the departure of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo.
He admitted that he became aware of Guo’s departure on August 15, raising concerns about the handling of immigration matters.
As Commissioner, Viado will be tasked with addressing these challenges and improving the efficiency and integrity of the Bureau of Immigration.
