PBBM: Filipinos will not shy away from duty to defend the Philippines

DAVAO CITY, Philippines–– President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized on Wednesday that the 126th anniversary of the Philippines’ declaration of independence is not just about commemorating history but also a call to continue the fight for liberty.

Speaking at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila during the anniversary celebration, Marcos underscored the nation’s readiness to defend its sovereignty. He paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for freedom and independence, reinforcing the ongoing duty to protect the nation’s territory.

“Our ancestors did not retreat from war, so we too will not turn away from our duty to defend our homeland,” President Marcos asserted.

He further stated, “We will show the world that true power is not measured by strength or wealth, but by the righteousness of our cause, the fervor of our patriotism, and the unyielding unity of our people.”

President Marcos highlighted that Filipinos are not just reflecting on the past but are actively living out its legacy with every step towards a freer future.

In his speech, he emphasized the ongoing commitment to uphold the values of the nation’s forebears: standing firm for the rights of a free nation, proactively uplifting communities, and persistently striving to improve citizens’ lives.

The President also stressed the importance of imparting the lessons of the past to the younger generation. He wants the youth to understand the sacrifices made by the nation’s ancestors and heroes to achieve freedom and peace. Freedom, he noted, must be nurtured, protected, and continuously fought for.

“The occasion today—the Parade of Freedom that we will witness later—symbolizes our efforts to instill in the hearts of the new Filipinos present here today the true spirit of heroism, freedom, and hope,” he said.

Marcos Jr. called on all Filipinos to take pride in their identity and join in the journey towards a brighter and more prosperous future. He urged collective action to overcome challenges like poverty, hunger, and injustice.

“I call on all of you to continue to cherish and take pride in being Filipino. We will rise and advance as a nation with a clear vision for the future we aspire for. Let us come together on this journey towards a brighter and more prosperous tomorrow,” President Marcos said.

He added, “With every step and every effort, let us continue the fight for freedom—freedom from poverty, hunger, injustice, and other barriers to our development. Let us always remember: History is our key to genuine freedom and to a future full of hope, enlightenment, and prosperity.”
