The second season of the beloved ABC sitcom series is set to premiere this fall, following a wildly successful first season that debuted in December 2021.
The mockumentary-styled series, created by and starring Quinta Brunson, follows the trials and triumphs of a group of teachers working at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia. Its first season racked up seven nominations at the Emmys, with Brunson making history as the first Black woman to receive three nominations for a comedy.

Ahead, everything we know about the forthcoming season of Abbott Elementary.
When does Season 2 drop?
Abbott Elementary officially returns on September 21, with the first episode available to watch on ABC at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can also stream the episode the day after on Hulu.
Who is in the cast?
The main cast is returning for the show’s second season, including Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard.
What will the second season be about?
While there has yet to be any confirmation on forthcoming storylines, the cast teased potential plots in a recent interview with ELLE.
Brunson wants to take more field trips, literally and figuratively, outside of the Abbott Elementary halls; Ralph wants Barbara to start a choir in the vein of Sister Act 2; Walter wants the crew to travel to a teaching convention, except “they can’t afford an expensive one, so it’s, like, Atlantic City.” Williams hopes for more will-they, won’t-they romance from Gregory and Janine: “[Gregory’s] got to grow a lot before he’s ready for a relationship, period, let alone with Janine. However, we can see, from the outside point of view, how if they do the work, they could really have something special.

Brunson also previously talked to BAZAAR.com about balancing deep and complex storylines with the show’s signature comedic timing.
“With the 22-minute sitcom, you only have so much real estate to reveal the past of someone and give the audience insights into who these people are,” she said. “Because I wanted the show to be more funny than heavy—since we’re already dealing with a potentially heavy situation—it was important to me in our room to stick those moments in there underneath a joke, so that even the audience member isn’t really thinking about the context of like, ‘Whoa, that was pretty deep though.'”
