It wasn’t enough for Taylor Swift to surprise us with her appearance at the MTV VMAs tonight, she also had to drop some major news about her upcoming projects.
In her acceptance speech after winning Best Video for “All To0 Well,” the singer announced that her brand-new album—which we knew nothing about until tonight—drops this October 21.
While onstage, Swift thanked fans for voting for her and said that if it hadn’t been for them, she wouldn’t have been able to rerecord her old songs and make the “All Too Well” short film, which earned her five nominations at the Video Music Awards (Best Video, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, and Best Long Form Video). So far tonight, she has taken home the awards for Best Video and Best Long Form Video.

The “Look What You Made Me Do” singer said in her speech that she would reveal more details about the upcoming album at midnight—earning cheers from the awards show crowd—and that she did.
“Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight,” she wrote in an Instagram post, announcing the name of the 13-track album.
In the post, Swift revealed that the album will include songs about life—both enchanting and dark—written in the middle of the night.
“We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t – right this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake,” she wrote. “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terror and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve … we’ll meet ourselves.”
On her Instagram Story, the singer also shared a link to her online store for fans to preorder the album.
Swift attended the MTV VMAs tonight in a shimmering backless silver minidress encrusted with clear jewels and pearls by Oscar de la Renta, and matching strappy heels. She accessorized with pear-shaped diamond drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz and wore a timeless glam look, which included a bold red lip and a silver cat eye.
She shared a backstage video on TikTok of her transformation into the look, paying tribute to fellow VMAs winner Blackpink by putting their hit “Pink Venom” as the track to the clip.
