Britney Spears just scored a major victory in her ongoing legal battle against her father, Jamie Spears.
Yesterday, Judge Brenda Penny ruled that Jamie must sit for a deposition and produce documents that are being requested by Britney’s legal team within the next 30 days in Los Angeles, Variety reported. The documents are related to the pop star’s allegations that her father hired a security firm to surveil her during her conservatorship and had them do things such as monitor her phone and bug her bedroom to record private conversations.
The ruling indicates that the court has reason to further inquire into Britney’s allegations against her father, Variety noted.
Britney and Jamie have been involved in a contentious legal battle since the singer’s 13-year conservatorship was terminated last November.
The singer was put under a conservatorship in 2008, with Jamie given the legal right to oversee decisions regarding his daughter’s finances, health, business deals, and personal life, which he managed until 2019.
In a court hearing made during her legal bid to end her conservatorship last year, Britney addressed a multitude of grievances regarding her estranged relationship with her father.
“I am not happy, I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, it’s insane. And I’m depressed,” she said, per CNN. “My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, including my management … they should be in jail.”
It is currently uncertain if Britney will sit for a deposition by her father’s legal team. Her attorney, Mathew Rosengart, argued against having Britney be deposed.
“You don’t sit down a victim for a deposition to be deposed by the victimizer,” he said in the courtroom, per Variety.
