Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy has finally arrived, almost two years after the release of the show’s second season on July 31, 2020. As so much time has passed since season 2 dropped, you’d be forgiven for forgetting what transpired in the sci-fi-infused superhero show starring Elliot Page and Emmy-Raver Lampman.
Before you get acquainted with season 3’s Sparrow Academy, here’s a reminder of what took place during The Umbrella Academy‘s second season.
The Hargreeves siblings time-travel to the 1960s
To escape the apocalypse caused by Viktor (also known as The White Violin) at the end of season 1, Five uses his time travel powers to transport his siblings to Dallas, Texas in the 1960s. There’s just one problem though—they don’t all arrive on the same day.
Klaus arrives the earliest, along with his ghost companion Ben. The pair find themselves in 1960, and thanks to his mediumship, Klaus is quickly mistaken for a guru. He forms the cult “Destiny’s Children,” and the pair spend the next few years traveling the world with their cohort. However, Klaus tires of the cult leader lifestyle and decides to return to Dallas to find his lover Dave (whose story was told in season 1), who died in Vietnam, and stop him from enlisting in the army.
Allison arrives in a Dallas alleyway alone in 1961, a very dangerous time for a Black woman to be traveling solo. She immediately faces racist abuse, but finds refuge in a Black-owned beauty salon. It’s there that she meets her husband, civil rights activist Ray.
Luther lands in the alley in 1962, and having spent years alone on the Moon, is not happy to find himself solo once again. After unsuccessfully searching for his siblings, Luther takes a job working for nightclub owner Jack Ruby. (IRL, Ruby would go on to murder Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963, following Oswald’s arrest for the assassination of JFK).
Diego arrives in September 1, 1963, and realizing how close he’s landed to JFK’s future assassination, he decides to try and stop Oswald. However, this gets Diego locked up in a mental hospital where he meets Lila. At the time, he doesn’t realize she’s trying to infiltrate the Umbrellas on behalf of The Handler.
Viktor is transported to October 12, 1963, and following his involvement in the 2019 apocalypse, is a little confused. Leaving the alley, Viktor is hit by a car, and develops total amnesia. Viktor is taken in by Sissy, a housewife with an abusive husband, and starts to look after their young son, Harlan.
After witnessing the nuclear holocaust on November 25, 1963, Five is transported by Hazel to November 15, giving him time to stop the world from ending again. Five tracks down his siblings and tries to convince them to help him stop the world from ending.
Together, the siblings track down their father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and ask for his help in preventing the apocalypse and getting them back to 2019. He refuses, and unbeknownst to everyone else, their meeting changes the timeline irreparably.
JFK’s assassination
The assassination of John F. Kennedy plays a major role in the second season of The Umbrella Academy. Diego is determined to stop Kennedy’s death, but as he watches the moment from the Commission’s Infinite Switchboard, he finds that the timeline has already been changed. The FBI building in Dallas explodes moments before JFK is set to be killed, and the distraction allows the president to drive away.
It’s assumed that the Soviets caused the explosion, which leads to the nuclear war that Five witnesses when he first arrives in 1963. However, the explosion is actually caused by Viktor who is being questioned by agents that believe him to be a member of the KGB. The torture and emotional manipulation lead to Viktor losing control of his powers and lashing out.
Ben crosses over to the afterlife
Once again, Viktor is responsible for the apocalypse. After learning that Viktor causes the FBI building to explode, the Hargreeves siblings try to stop it from happening. Ben, who is present in ghost form, realizes that he can reach Viktor by jumping into his body. Once inside, Ben counsels Viktor, and helps him deal with the emotional trauma that’s causing his powers to erupt, thus stopping the apocalypse.
However, in helping Viktor, Ben starts to disintegrate, and is forced to cross over to the afterlife. But his sacrifice means that the building doesn’t explode, and JFK is assassinated, correcting the timeline.
Viktor transfers some of his powers to Harlan
In the 1960s, Viktor starts a new life and quickly falls in love with Sissy. However, when Sissy’s son Harlan drowns, Viktor revives the boy with his powers, accidentally transferring some of them to him in the process. As a result, Viktor and Harlan develop a psychic connection.
The Handler finds out about Harlan and, with the entire Commission, descends on Sissy’s farm. The Handler claims she’s there to hunt down JFK’s killers, and find the person responsible for murdering the Board of Directors—however, this was actually done by Five, under specific orders from The Handler herself, in exchange for a time-traveling suitcase. It’s clear that The Handler is also after Harlan so that she can harness his powers.
Showdown at the farm
Lila has no idea that her adoptive mother is responsible for the deaths of her real parents, and arrives to fight alongside her and the Commission. As Diego tries to convince Lila that she’s one of them—one of the 43 children born with superpowers in 1989—The Handler shoots all of the Hargreeves siblings dead.
However, Five remains conscious enough to travel back in time a few seconds. He manages to disarm The Handler, and she is shot dead by the Swede originally hired to assassinate Five. Lila grabs a suitcase and transports herself away from the scene.
Sadly, Allison leaves Ray in 1963, after he tells her he has too much work to do during the civil rights movement. And in the end, Viktor believes he’s taken all of his powers back from Harlan, however a brief scene shows that this isn’t the case. Harlan remains in the 1960s with his mother.
The Umbrellas use another suitcase abandoned by the Commission to transport themselves back to 2019, arriving one day after the apocalypse that was caused by Viktor in season 1.
Another timeline?
Initially, the Hargreeves siblings believe that they’re home, and that the apocalypse was prevented. However, once back at Reginald’s mansion, it’s revealed that they’re actually intruding in The Sparrow Academy. Reginald indicates that he was expecting them, and the gang is surprised to see Ben standing with the Sparrow cohort. It’s clear that the timeline has been changed, and that they’re a long way from home, once again.
