Mariah Carey fans, rejoice. Last night, one of pop music’s most beloved divas got inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Carey made an entrance at the gala last night in a black strapless Oscar de la Renta dress embellished with shimmering silver appliqués and featuring a sweetheart neckline. She glammed up the look even more with black mesh opera gloves, a chunky diamond bracelet, matching diamond necklace, and cascading diamond earrings.
She wore her ombre hair down in glamorous waves and wore a gala-appropriate beauty look consisting of a smoky eye and glossy nude lip.
At the event—which was originally set to take place in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic—Carey doubled as the honoree and comedian of the night and poked fun at her high-maintenance reputation. At one point, she even put on sunglasses while joking about the bad lighting in the room.
During her acceptance speech, however, the singer took on a more serious note, getting emotional while calling her fellow songwriters the “unsung heroes.”
Carey chose 13-year-old self-taught singer Liamani Segura to perform at the ceremony in her honor. Segura wowed the star-studded crowd with a medley of Carey’s biggest hits from her 30-year career, including “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
The 2022 induction gala honored Carey, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, The Isley Brothers, Steve Miller, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, Rick Nowels, and William “Mickey” Stevenson.
Lil Nas X also accepted a special honor for talented young songwriters.
