While April 22—otherwise known as Earth Day—serves as an excellent reminder for everyone to be more mindful of their impact on Mother Nature, here at BAZAAR, we’re taking baby steps every day to incorporate more eco-conscious habits into our lives. Our definition of earth-friendly doesn’t stop at just sorting trash from recycling (though it helps). From the consistent use of plastic-free and refillable beauty products to upcycled clothing and accessories, our editors work to make sustainability a top priority during this month and beyond.
Contrary to what some may believe, some of the best eco-friendly products are easier than ever to find, not to mention equal parts stylish and practical. To make it easy for you to switch from single-use to biodegradable and post-consumer, we’ve pulled together a short list of some of our favorite eco-conscious items from popular brands like Plus, Bed Threads, Sami Miro Vintage, For Days, and more that are truly worth the buy.

“This packable and surprisingly roomy mesh bag has become one of my go-to summer staples, especially since it’s made from water-resistant recycled polyester and plastic. Plus, the bag never digs into my shoulders or across my body while I’m wearing it, and has a zippered closure that keeps all my essentials secure.” —Tiffany Dodson, associate beauty commerce editor
“Eco-conscious design has always been at the core of Mara Hoffman’s brand. Some of the designer’s signature pieces—like this vibrant Raya crop top and skirt combo—are made from 100 percent hemp, one of the earth’s most sustainable fabrics. I wore this set for my birthday in Puerto Rico and know I’ll be treasuring it in the years to come.” —Bianca Betancourt, culture editor
“One area I could stand to be more environmentally conscious in is my cleaning supplies; truly, I have no idea what’s in some of the stuff I’ve been using, let alone the packaging I throw away. Enter this set from Supernatural, which includes pretty, reusable glass bottles and cleaning concentrates made for Wood + Floors, Glass + Mirrors, Bath + Tile, and Counter + Granite. Not only does it produce way less waste, but the formulas are made with recognizable ingredients (and they smell incredible too).” —Lindy Segal, interim digital beauty director
“I really love a great pair of trousers. Aeron is a sustainable label that has a streamlined aesthetic but can also really surprise you with interesting details, cuts, and colors. I love everything I have from them.” —Kerry Pieri, digital fashion director
“I like to apply Beautycounter’s hydrating essence every day before my moisturizer and SPF. It feels good on my skin—and on my conscious to be using a product that’s both eco-friendly and clean.” —Chelsey Sanchez, associate editor
“We use these countertop compost bins—have been using them for the past two years, and even in the summer, never had an issue with odor or leaks. We use a local compost service for pickup. In NYC, BK Rot is a service I hear a lot of good things about.” —Kaitlyn Greenidge, features director
“Ever since Pangea launched last year, I’ve been loving their simple-yet-effective bodycare products. The brand just unveiled a skincare collection, which is made with plant-based ingredients and plastic-free packaging that is just as good as the body products. I love a great foaming cleanser, and Pangea’s takes the day off of my face without leaving it feeling tight and stripped.” —Katie Intner, assistant beauty editor
“In the past few years, I’ve become obsessed with home decor, and when I was redoing my bedroom, I came across Bed Threads. The OEKO-TEX 100-certified brand does everything home, but its best products are the bedding sets, which come in the chicest earthy colors (pink clay, rust, terra cotta, sage, petrol, oatmeal, olive) and are made of eco-friendly flax linen.” —Rosa Sanchez, senior news editor
“My husband and I added this bamboo nesting bowl set to our wedding registry last year, and it’s quickly become one of our favorite gifts of all time (and one of the best eco-friendly products too). Since the set comes with seven bowls in a number of different sizes, we use it for just about everything—from morning cereal to actual meal prep.” —TD
“This face oil smells amazing, and my skin is always so soft after using it. I love that the brand’s packaging (which is made from renewable materials) is recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable within three months.” —Jamie Wilson, beauty editor
“As a Latina, I fell in love with LOTI, a Peruvian brand, because of how much innovation Lottie Bertello is bringing to her country’s fashion industry and how wearable her art is. Bertello creates from scraps: She upcycles men’s cotton dress shirts, prints her own patterns over them, cuts them up, and makes Williamsburg-chic magic; she also collects leftover fabric from a cotton mill in Lima to use in her pieces. She just dropped her new lifestyle collection, and the chestnut and beige Guadalupe wool trousers are every stylish Gen Zer’s dream.” —RS
“The first time I heard about Plus as a brand, the science nerd in me was immediately intrigued. And once I tested their dissolvable packaging and products for myself, I became an overnight fan. Not only does this handy dispenser contain tear-away body wash sheets that actually make showering cool, but the paper-like sheets also magically foam up into a dreamy, fragrant lather when wet, which practically makes me feel like Bill Nye the Science Guy in my own bathroom.” —TD
“Plus broke my bad beauty habit of buying into hyped-up new products and only using them once or twice. I use Plus daily, not only because it dissolves without a trace, but because it has the foamiest cleansing lather and the scent is heavenly. I keep the dispenser in my shower at home and take a packet in my gym bag to use in the locker room after a group fitness class.” —Halie LeSavage, fashion commerce editor
“All of Ceremonia’s hair products are not just good for the earth, but they make your hair look damn good too. The brand prides itself on their clean formulas using ingredients found in Latin America—like aloe, acai, and chia seed—to enhance your hair’s natural texture. Their Sunday Reset Duo is a personal favorite—no shampoo and conditioning combo has ever made my hair more lush.” —BB
“I’ve been keeping a close eye on brands tiptoeing into regenerative farming, a process that captures excess carbon by restoring biodiversity in the soil where cotton for clothing is grown. Christy Dawn entered the space with a line of ‘farm-to-closet’ apparel grown on land it owns, including this breezy sundress I’m ordering for some upcoming vacations.
“Reformation is also exploring regenerative production, and its sweater made with regenerative wool is my favorite for throwing over my shoulders as a last-minute layer.” —HL
“I never thought I’d be the type of person who keeps more than a travel-size bottle of Purell in her purse, but the pandemic has opened my eyes to a whole new world when it comes to hand sanitizer. This refillable, twist-up sanitizer set from Evolvetogether has quickly become one of my favorites. It contains 70 percent ethyl alcohol that’s made from sugarcane, plus ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, and essentials oils that don’t dry out my hands. Did I mention it also smells like the beach and comes in recyclable packaging?” —TD
“On a skincare level, Youth to the People’s Superberry Dream Cleansing Balm is one of the best makeup removal balms I’ve ever used—it doesn’t dry out my skin, keeps my skin glowing, the texture is a dream, and it gets every last bit of makeup off of my face. On a sustainable level, I have a healthy conscience on keeping Youth to the People products in my skincare rotation. The brand always chooses glass rather than plastic for their product packaging and all of their ingredients—like jojoba and prickly pear oils—are sourced locally in California.” —BB
“I first came across Ethan on Instagram last year and have since become fascinated by their sustainability journey. The designer, Elle Dyner, produces small quantities of her pieces and uses only natural fibers and recycled materials (the garments are packed in reusable cotton bags). For the sunny months coming up, the brand’s embroidered, sea- and nature-inspired gender-fluid styles—such as the Wave Pant and Storm Top, made from naturally dyed cotton—will be my weekend go-tos.” —RS
“Sami Miro has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainability. The designer always uses recycled fabrics for her edgy designs that include her signature sweat suits, minidresses, and her celeb-approved Porterhouse jeans.” —BB
“I wear oversized button-downs more than any other type of top, and For Days’ zero-waste version is my new favorite. Its cotton poplin, made with a blend of organic and recycled fibers, is crisp, breathable, and 100 percent recyclable. I’ll be spending all summer in this top with the matching shorts.” —HL
“Chantecaille is rooted in giving back, and because the products are so gorgeous, it makes it easy to be a part of their efforts. Each Philanthropic Cheek Shades has a different animal etched into the blush to signify which organization it gives back to. My go-to is the Elephant Smitten shade, which adorns a beautiful pink elephant and gives a gorgeous luminescent peach cast to cheeks. A select amount of profits from each sale support the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.” —KI
