Queen Elizabeth will be skipping a royal tradition in the coming days, but she made sure to virtually attend the official opening of the Royal London Hospital’s Queen Elizabeth Unit.

The monarch has been expressing her support for National Health Service workers, and in the past several days spent time speaking with hospital staff who have cared for the community amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it, what can be done, when needs be?” the queen said in the video call. “It’s been very nice to join you, and also to hear about what happened, and how well it has been achieved. Thank you very much indeed, all of you.”
At the event, Sir Kenneth Olisa, the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, unveiled a plaque on behalf of the queen, marking the official opening of her hospital unit, which takes up floors 14 and 15 of the hospital. With 155 beds, it is one of the biggest critical care spaces in the United Kingdom.

The queen’s virtual visit comes ahead of the Royal Maundy service, which will take place on Thursday. The monarch—who has been working mostly from her home, Windsor Castle, since she recovered from COVID-19 earlier this year—has pulled out of the event for the first time and will instead be represented by son Prince Charles and his wife, Duchess Camilla, Buckingham Palace announced.
