Gigi Hadid announced yesterday on Instagram that she plans to donate all her earnings from fashion month—during which she walked the runways for the fall 2022 shows of Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, Coperni, Versace, and more—to relief efforts for the people of Ukraine and Palestine.
“Having a set Fashion Month schedule has meant that my colleagues and I often present new fashion collections during heartbreaking and traumatic times in history,” the supermodel wrote, captioning a slideshow of photos and videos of her fashion month experience over the past few weeks. “We don’t have control over most of our work schedules, but we would like to walk ‘for’ something.”
Hadid noted that she took inspiration in fellow model Mica Argañaraz, who announced in late February that she would be donating part of her fashion month income to Ukrainian organizations.
“Following in the footsteps of my friend @micarganaraz, I am pledging to donate my earnings from the Fall 2022 shows to aid those suffering from the war in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine,” continued Hadid, who is of Dutch and Palestinian heritage. “Our eyes and hearts must be open to all human injustice. May we all see each other as brothers and sisters, beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. At the the end of the day, innocent lives pay for war- not leaders. HANDS OFF UKRAINE. HANDS OFF PALESTINE. PEACE. PEACE. PEACE.

Since Russian president Vladimir Putin launched a military attack against Ukraine in late February, leading to the evacuation of at least one million people, the fashion world at large has showed its support for those who have been forced to seek refuge in neighboring countries. Major brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Nike have suspended sales operations in Russia, and luxury groups Kering, LVMH, and OTB Foundation committed generous donations to Ukrainian relief efforts.
Hadid, whose father’s family became refugees in Syria after the mass exodus of Palestinians in 1948 known as the Nakba, has also previously expressed solidarity with those from her father’s homeland.
In a now-deleted post shared last May, Hadid shared a widely circulated statement that read, “One cannot advocate for racial equality, LGBT and women’s rights, condemn corrupt and abusive regimes … yet choose to ignore the Palestinian oppression.”
For Harper’s BAZAAR‘s August 2021 cover story, she reflected on her multiracial background. “Anyone who is multiracial, or even if you aren’t, can feel different pressures from each community,” she said.
