Anne Hathaway Supported the Trans Community with This Meaningful Accessory

Anne Hathaway wasn’t just glitz and glam at the premiere of WeCrashed this weekend; her look also communicated an important message.

The actress walked the red carpet at the Paramount Theater in Austin during South by Southwest Saturday in a metallic Versace gown with a plunging neckline, triangular waist cutouts, and a silver Versace Medusa head framed by oversized safety pins.

She finished the looked with silver sandals and—the star of the show—a mini top-handle purse by sustainable Thai brand PIPATCHARA. The handmade macramé bag was silver and bedazzled to match the rest of Hathaway’s look, but at the top, it had a light blue, pink, and white striped design—also known as the transgender flag.

“This is so insane! Means the world to us!! Gorgeous @annehathaway with our #itsminiamu at #sxsw2022,” the brand wrote on Instagram, alongside a carousel of photos of Hathaway’s all-silver look.

The mom of two hasn’t publicly commented on her meaningful accessory, but it comes as Texas’s Republican governor, Greg Abbott, is being criticized for his anti-trans order directing the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate cases of gender-affirming care among youths in the state, and for his comments equating gender-transition procedures to “child abuse.”

This is not the first time the Devil Wears Prada actress has spoken out in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2016, the star, who grew up as Catholic in New Jersey, told GQ that when her brother Michael told the family he was gay, they abandoned their religion. “Well, the whole family converted to episcopalianism after my elder brother came out. Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother? So I’m … nothing. Fuck it, I’m forming. I’m a work in progress,” she said.

In 2018, the Oscar winner was honored at a Human Rights Campaign gala with the National Equality Award for her LGBTQ+ activism. During her acceptance speech, she addressed a young trans girl named Ella—after Hathaway’s character in Ella Enchanted—who sent her a letter, thanking her for being an ally. “Ella sweetie, I want to make something absolutely clear to you, it takes zero courage to love you,” Hathaway said.

Most recently, in a June 2020 Instagram post ahead of the presidential election, the actress voiced the need to stand up to anti-trans laws and asked her followers to help vote to secure the freedom and rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

“TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS. In the middle of a pandemic, in the middle of Pride Month, on the fourth anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, on the week Riah Milton and Dominique ‘Rem’mie’ Fells – two Black Trans Women – were murdered, Donald Trump erased Transgender civil rights protections in healthcare. No. I am as angry as I have ever been,” she wrote. “To my Trans brothers and sisters: I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry. I love you, I stand with you, I will fight this alongside you.”
