Chlöe and Halle Bailey on Their “Less Is More” Skin Care Routines and Fitting in Self-Care

Chlöe and Halle Bailey are on a hot streak. They’re fresh off of appearances at the Met Gala and the MTV Video Music Awards; Chlöe set Twitter on fire with her solo debut, “Have Mercy”; and Halle is starring in a little movie remake called The Little Mermaid. Oh, and this is all in addition to their shared music careers (they’ve been nominated for four Grammy Awards as Chlöe x Halle) and roles on Grown-ish, which is currently in its fourth season.

Through it all, Chlöe, 23, and Halle, 21, remain as tight as can be and earlier this year were named the first sister brand ambassadors of Neutrogena, adding to their already extensive résumés. Chatting with the pair, we dive into their beauty routines, self-care, and, of course, Chlöe’s next-level “Have Mercy” glam.

Chlöe and Halle have been in the spotlight since they were young teens, but now that they’re solidly in their 20s, the duo say that they’ve taken on a more minimalist approach to caring for their skin. “I’m learning to kind of cut back on the products a bit,” Chlöe says. “With stress, and a bunch of travel, the more products I put on my face, the more I tend to break out,” she says. “I’m learning that less is more, and as long as I’m keeping it consistent and doing it daily, then my skin is pretty cooperative.”

Halle agrees, recalling when she would try to overcorrect with products. “When I was younger and we were on tour, I would do way too much on my skin especially when I would have breakouts,” she says. “I would get anxious like, ‘I need to get this off my face now! Let me do a mask here, let me do a scrub here.’” Now, she says, “My skin is being nicer to me, and I keep it simple and I’m good.”

Still, there are a few products that help the stars maintain that glowing skin. They’re fans of Neutrogena’s new Skin Perfecting Daily Liquid Exfoliant line, which includes three acid-blend formulas customized for oily, dry, and combination skin types, all designed to be gentle enough for daily use. Halle uses the oily skin formula, made with a 7 percent alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) blend to unclog pores. “What I really appreciate about it is that even though it’s an exfoliant and there’s acid in it, it still feels like I’m using the most fresh, natural thing. It doesn’t irritate me in any way,” Halle says.

Chlöe opts for the normal-and-combination skin formula, a 9 percent blend of AHAs and polyhydroxy acids (PHAs). “My skin is pretty normal and consistent, but I have those days where it wants to go a bit crazy,” Chlöe says. “I’m happy that using it gives me the freedom to control every form that my skin comes in.”

Halle, a self-proclaimed “sun bunny,” is an Invisible Daily Defense Sunscreen devotee. “I have learned that we do need protection from the sun. For years, I was in denial about it,” she says. “What I love about that one is that it disappears right into my skin, I don’t have to worry about a white cast, and I can put makeup over it.” And for the occasional breakout, Halle goes for the AM and PM spot treatments. “Especially for random zits. I’ll go zap-zip-zoop-zoop-zoop,” she says while animatedly dotting around her face.

Meanwhile, Chlöe’s all about the Hydro Boost serum. “I use it in the morning after I cleanse my skin,” she says. “I’ve really been loving my facial roller, and I’ll put the serum on with that.” And she swears by a Neutrogena classic. “I still love the wipes,” Chlöe says. “I think that’s my favorite product. Especially with the micellar water in it, if I have stubborn eyeliner or mascara, it’ll get that baby off.”

Speaking of makeup: Both sisters have had their fair share of incredible glam lately. Between the VMAs, Met Gala, and Chlöe’s “Have Mercy” music video, they’ve turned out look after look. The video alone features nearly a dozen looks—but one stands out. “I think one of my favorite beauty looks would have to be when I had this gold jacket on, and my skin was really clean and I just had this silvery, glittery eye,” Chlöe says. “I usually love a huge lash strip and I didn’t have that with that look; it was really simple and fun and light.” She says that the secret behind the looks is keeping everything balanced. “If the outfit’s crazy, I’ll keep the makeup simple. Or if the outfit’s simple, I like to crazy it on up with the makeup.”

That word—balance—is something both Chlöe and Halle are working on. With such grueling schedules, one thing that falls to the wayside is taking time for themselves. “If I’m going to be completely transparent, I’m still learning how to take time out for myself and to care for me,” Chlöe says. But they still find peace in the small moments. “For the time being, I use my morning routines as my time. I’ll say my little prayer, and I’ll do my skin care routine. Even when I do the simple face roller, I feel like I’m taking care of myself.” Beyond her routine, she says that she’s still figuring it out. “I think we both are, to find the balance of working hard and also taking care of our mental health.”

Halle agrees, adding that self-care is “a journey.” But she looks for the moments of quiet in the chaos. “Being outside, being in the sun—those are always my safe places and when I feel the most grounded.”
